Capital YTri Membership Pledge

The Capital YTri team membership pledge states the values and practices we uphold as team members. Each teammate commits to these values and practices as a member of the Capital YTri team.

As a team, we strive to be an inclusive, joyful community that supports and encourages triathletes at all levels of experience and training to reach the goals they set for themselves. This means:

  • We are welcoming and inclusive. We support anyone who wants to be a triathlete and cheer equally hard for all our teammates. We respect each other’s individual goals within our sport. We treat each other with kindness and respect, and seek to create an environment that is fun, positive, generous, and supportive.

  • As a team, we act on our values within our community.  Recognizing systemic barriers that make triathlon less accessible to many communities, we look for ways to make our team and sport more accessible to those who identify as BIPOC and LGBTQIA+; to all athletes regardless of gender, age, immigration status, country of origin, or religious beliefs; and to para-athletes and all those who have differing abilities. As a team, we look for ways to give back to our local community, including the DC YMCA, and to expand opportunities for people from all backgrounds to participate in triathlon. We recognize that triathlon is an expensive sport and collectively look for ways to reduce financial barriers to participation.

  • We believe in human dignity. Behavior and language that is racist, sexist, homophobic, transphobic, or derogatory toward any individual or group is not tolerated on our team. We do not tolerate unwelcome advances or any form of emotional, sexual, or physical harassment.

  • We practice honesty and good sportsmanship.  We don’t cheat. In races and practices, we are respectful, aware, and considerate of others in the spaces we use, whether that’s pedestrians on sidewalks or other runners, bikers, swimmers, or fellow competitors in a race.

  • We respect each other’s time, and we try to contribute to the work of organizing a volunteer-run team as much as possible. We show up on time for workouts. When we can’t, we communicate in advance with our coaches. We recognize that volunteer-run organizations rely on volunteers. Knowing that each of us has different demands each season, when we can, we volunteer our time each season to help with an event, workout, or operational or administrative need.
